New Classes Offered in 2009-2010

The Janus School is excited to offer new classes in 2009-2010. Read below about the additional classes that are being offered to students this year.

  • African Dance- This is an all-female Health and Wellness class. Primary focus is on physical activity along with body awareness and appreciation of this unique type of movement. We will learn dance movements, music, and culture from the traditions of Guinea, West Africa. We will relate this experience to the worlds of dance, of Africa, and of women’s health & wellness, particularly through our daily student-led discussion segment.

  • Computer Programing- This class will use Alice, computer programming software offered free through Carnegie Mellon, to begin to learn the basics of computer programming

  • Spanish- In this class, you will learn basics of Spanish pronunciation, vocabulary, and conversation, along with introductory Spanish grammar concepts. We'll also be exploring aspects of different cultures in Spanish-speaking countries throughout the world.

  • Graphic Design- In this course, students will learn basic concepts of graphic design and visual communication. Students will study the theory behind visual communication and how designers and advertisers use this information to successfully communicate information and persuade viewers.

  • Martial Arts- In this course, students will learn about styles and techniques of martial arts. Students will also train their bodies to become more physically fit.

  • Film Production- In this class, students will explore different theories of filmmaking then apply them to the actual filmmaking process. Students will be required to write, produce, direct, and act in a film that they create. Genres such as drama, comedy, documentary, sci-fi, and fact-based films will be covered.

  • Get REAL (Real Education for Actual Life)- In this unique trimester class, students experience personal growth as they learn practical life skills. This class helps students develop the life skills necessary to achieve personal satisfaction through hands-on tasks that encourage self-respect, responsibility, and attention to the details. Topics include cooking skills, table manners, basic sewing, and healthy habits

  • Performing Arts- In this class, students will be introduced to a wide variety of theater exercises designed to increase awareness of themselves and others. Pantomime and improvisation are wonderful ways for children to explore their own feelings and learn about the feelings of others in a safe, unthreatening, and creative way.
