Lower Division | Middle Division | Upper Division
Middle Division is grades 6 through 8.
Students are grouped by skill and learning style.
Intensive remediation takes place throughout the day, in all classes, with language arts, math, science, social studies, art, music, physical education, socialization study skills, and communication.
The Middle Division program and goals provide a transition between the Lower and Upper Divisions. Although remediation is still emphasized, the students also work to improve their background and content area knowledge. Students have independent projects that they work on outside of school, a change from the Lower Division where students complete all projects in school. This helps prepare the students for transition to the Upper Division where the expectations will be that they learn independently.
Middle Division students are graded in Reading, Writing, and Math
In the Middle Division, students move away from learning without the stress of receiving grades to receiving grades in their core classes of math, reading, and writing. They work on developing greater self-awareness and metacognition. They are encouraged to take more personal responsibility for their education and personal risks both in class and in extracurricular activities, such as the school play. Although remediation is still emphasized, the students also work to improve their general fund of knowledge and knowledge specific to the content areas.
Individualized instruction is a Janus hallmark, along with generous amounts of time to grasp lessons. Learning by making mistakes is accepted, not ridiculed. Through socialization and communication classes, students learn about choice, action, and consequences, as well as develop skills and attitudes that lead toward self-empowerment.
