F.L.I.T.E.

Foundations for Learning Independence Through Education: The Janus Post-Secondary Opportunity

The Janus School's 10-month post-secondary program is designed to provide students the skills that will assist them in functioning independently and successfully within the adult world and college environment. The post-secondary program is focused on individualized instruction, developing every student's academic and social skills in order to be successful lifelong learners.

The purpose of the Janus post-secondary program is to support and facilitate learning in the college setting. Following best practice models, students are directly taught skills that will enable independence and self-responsibility as a learner and adult.

Unlike The Janus School core program, applicants for the post-secondary program are not required to have a diagnosed learning disability as a prerequisite for enrollment.

Instruction and support in the following areas are emphasized:

A student must possess a high school diploma, and must be accepted and enrolled in a local 4-year, vocational/technical, or community college, and must complete the Janus admission process as a requirement for enrollment.

Program dates and schedule

The non-residential program runs August through June, and is aligned with The Janus School calendar. Students can enroll for a semester or the full academic year. Students attend classes at Janus from 8 AM – 12 noon, and college courses in the afternoon, evening, and weekends.

Students are enrolled in the following classes during the morning program:

Year-long Foundation Courses Year-Long 3-Part Modules Small Group Remedial Instruction, as needed
Transition and Reflection Study Skills Reading
Expository Writing Social Skills Math
    Assistive Technology

Each student will be assigned and will regularly meet with an advisor at Janus; the advisor acts as a liaison with the college guidance/advising office and supports the student as he/she develops his/her skills as an independent student. The advisor is also involved in college and career decision making, such as choosing classes and applying for summer jobs.

The cost of the program does not include transportation, residential costs, or college tuition and fees. A laptop computer is highly recommended.
